UK’s top host loses 100s of websites with only ancient backups…

A lot of people have just had a stark reminder of the importance of up-to-date backups.

This month website hosting company 123 Reg suffered a hardware failure on one of its servers. This led to some of its customers’ websites either being lost entirely, partially lost, or restored to an old version dating back to August 2017.

As you can imagine, users were left in a state of anger and confusion. 123 Reg, which calls itself the UK’s “number one website provider”, took a while to let customers know when a normal service would resume and when (if ever) they’d have their websites back online.

This chaotic situation has hit numerous individuals as well as businesses, making them look unprofessional and causing them to lose customer trust and money. It’s presumably up to individual users to ensure that they have backups.

Such little catastrophises are rare, but by no means unheard of.  However their UpdraftPlus users who’d set regular backups were safe: instead of panicking, losing out or having to make do with an old, out-dated version of their website, they would be able to restore everything with a click of a few buttons.

So spread the word: everyone with a website should have insurance – in this online world, plagued as much by incompetence and error as by malicious cybercrime, having backups makes perfect sense.

GoDaddy confirms UpdraftPlus and MetaSlider are the most popular plugins of their category

Over the last year GoDaddy has identified the 100 themes and plugins most installed on GoDaddy servers.

We were gratified to find UpdraftPlus there as the most popular backup plugin. It’s always nice to have recognition. Backups aren’t very glamorous; they’re a bit like insurance, in that you only really notice and appreciate them when you need them. But we’ve evolved our plugin into something that not only makes backup-making simple and convenient, but also hosts a whole load of other useful features, including website restoration and migration.

Also on GoDaddy’s list was MetaSlider, described as the most popular image slider plugin. The article mentions how the plugin can be upgraded to unlock features such as video slides and HTML overlays, and its compatibility with other plugins such as WooCommerce, Events Caendar and WPML. We’re hoping to add all kinds of extra features and enhancements to MetaSlider this year, so watch this space!

We’re continuing to grow our development team to continue to make all our plugins the best and most popular of their kind in the world.

New features for WP-Optimize: automatic UDP backup before optimization and more

WP-Optimize 2.1.1 is now released.

Amongst other improvements it features the ability to take a automatic backup with UpdraftPlus before an optimization.  WP-Optimize has always recommended taking a backup before optimizing the database in case you ask it to clean out a part of the database you intended to keep.  This feature will trigger its sister-plugin UpdraftPlus to take one automatically, saving you time.

Also, when optimizing from the dashboard, tables are now optimized one by one, to reduce the scope for annoying timeouts.

If you aren’t yet using WP-Optimize, you can get it free from here.
